What is the weather like in Benidorm in winter?

Winter in Benidorm is mild and bright rather than warm: afternoons sit between 17°C and 20.5°C, nights fall to 6–10°C, and each month averages only three to four days with 1 mm of rain or more. These are AEMET's 1981–2010 normals for Alicante, the nearest official station with a long record.

Sunshine is the weak point compared with summer. AEMET's figures work out at 5.3 hours a day in December, the dullest month, rising to 7.3 hours in March. Some guides quote eight hours of winter sun a day; the official normals do not support that.

The sea lags behind the air. November is still 19.5°C because the water holds summer heat, but by February it is 14.2°C, the coldest of the year on seatemperature.org's averages. Each month has its own page: November, December, January, February and March.

Who is Benidorm in winter best for?

Winter suits people who want sunshine and company more than beach heat: retired long-stayers, couples who like walking and an evening show, and anyone hunting for off-peak prices. It is less suited to families who want water parks or groups who want every Strip bar open.

Long-stay visitors from northern Europe arrive in autumn and stay for weeks or months, and Spain's state-subsidised Imserso senior holidays fill many hotels too. In 2025–26 the first Imserso trips left on 19 October, with high season covering October, May and June, so the programme runs roughly from autumn to early summer. Benidorm's share of the region's Imserso places has fallen from about 80% to under half, according to Hosteltur. Our Benidorm for over-60s guide covers accessible beaches, scooters and afternoon shows.

What stays open in Benidorm in winter?

Most of Benidorm keeps trading through winter: hotels, restaurants, the cabaret bars and the bigger show venues. The main closures are the two big summer parks and a minority of British bars that take a break in January and February.

Benidorm council says its beaches have lifeguard and cleaning services twelve months a year, which is unusual on the Spanish coast. Sunbed hire is a different matter: visitors report there are no sunbeds on the sand in January, and the official concession dates are not published.

    Theme parks

Aqualandia ran from 23 May to 27 September in 2026 and is shut all winter. Terra Mítica opened its 2026 season on 15 May and its official calendar runs only from May to November; the exact closing weekend in November is unconfirmed.

Mundomar is listed by the ticket reseller taquilla.com as open from 2 January to 1 November, which implies a break in November and December; we could not check this on the official calendar. Terra Natura opens at weekends, on public holidays and over Christmas from November to March, again according to taquilla.com rather than the zoo itself, so check before you travel. See the full Benidorm theme parks guide.

    Bars that close for winter

A handful of well-known bars close for a few weeks after New Year. Last winter's list on Benidorm Seriously included Jail Rock (until 1 February), Jokers (until early February), Zodiac and Valentines (until March), Tommy's Bar (17 January to 1 March) and the Shamrock (back around St Patrick's Day). These are last season's dates, not confirmed for 2026–27.

A reader quoted on the same site summed it up: many disco bars around the Square and the Strip shut, but plenty of cabaret bars stay open. Our live bars closed for winter list is the place to check current closures.

    Shows and entertainment

Benidorm Palace runs its show on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with doors at 20:00 and the show at 22:00 (22:15 on Saturdays), according to a Musement listing. Whether it takes a winter break was not published, so confirm before booking. Afternoon and early-evening acts carry on across town; what's on this afternoon and what's on tonight list them day by day.

    Christmas and New Year

In 2025 the lights were switched on on Saturday 29 November, and Plaza SSMM Reyes de España became the Plaza de la Navidad until 6 January, with an ice rink, food and gift stalls and fireworks. Santa's House was at Hort de Colón. On New Year's Eve the fiesta commission ran an all-day party in the square, with a children's countdown at midday and DJs again from 22:00 to midnight; no entry fee was mentioned. El Español reported hotel occupancy peaks of 92% for New Year's Eve 2025, so book early.

    Benidorm Fest and the cyclo-cross

EFE reports that Benidorm Fest 2027 opens on Saturday 23 January with semi-finals on 26 and 28 January and the final on Saturday 30 January; RTVE had not announced it when we checked. Tickets are due on sale in November 2026. RTVE withdrew from Eurovision 2026, and the 2027 rules say the winner goes to Eurovision only if RTVE takes part. A week earlier, on 17 January 2027, the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup returns to Parque Foietes and El Moralet.

How busy is Benidorm in winter?

Benidorm stays open in winter, but it is noticeably calmer than summer outside the holiday peaks. Hotel association Hosbec figures reported in the press give 64.6% occupancy for January 2026 and 75.5% for February 2025, against 92.7% in the first half of August 2025.

Event timing moves these numbers. Alicante Plaza reported that January 2026 was about four points down on the year before because Benidorm Fest moved to February; with the 2027 contest back in January, the last week of the month should be busier. In February 2025 Spanish guests (40.6%) narrowly outnumbered British guests (about 40.3%).

Things to do in Benidorm in winter

Cooler days are the best time for walking. The waymarked Ruta La Cruz climbs 237 m over 5 km return to the illuminated cross above Rincón de Loix, and the accessible Serra Gelada route follows wooden walkways and benches for about 7 km from Plaza del Castell to the Punta del Cavall tower. Both are in our free things to do guide.

For cooler or wetter days, the free Museu Boca del Calvari in the Old Town opens daily from 12:00 to 20:00. The weekly street markets, such as the Wednesday and Sunday market in Rincón de Loix, add a morning out (see Benidorm outdoor markets), and the rainy day guide has more indoor ideas. A December Christmas market runs at Parque de Elche from 10:00 to 20:00, according to mercadillos.org.

What to pack for Benidorm in winter

Pack for two climates: T-shirt afternoons in the sun and evenings that can feel cold once the temperature drops below 10°C.

    • A warm jacket or fleece for evenings, plus a jumper for shaded streets and the walk home.
    • Sunglasses and sun cream: even December averages over five hours of sunshine a day.
    • A light waterproof for the three or four wet days a month; November and October are the wettest of the autumn-winter run.
    • Swimwear if your hotel has a heated pool; the sea is 14–16°C from December to April.
    • Comfortable walking shoes for Serra Gelada and the Old Town's slopes.

    Benidorm in winter — FAQs

    Is Benidorm warm in winter?

It is mild rather than warm. AEMET's normals give daytime highs of 17–20.5°C from November to March and night-time lows of 6–10°C. Sunny afternoons feel like a pleasant late spring, but evenings need a jacket, and the sea falls to around 14°C in February.

Can you swim in the sea in Benidorm in winter?

You can, and lifeguard and cleaning services run all year according to the council, but the water is cold. Average sea temperatures are 16.5°C in December, 14.6°C in January and 14.2°C in February. Most visitors stick to a heated hotel pool; November, at 19.5°C, is the last comfortable month for most swimmers.

Yes, it is one of the resort's core seasons for older visitors. Long-stayers come for weeks of mild sunshine, the Imserso senior programme runs from autumn to early summer, walks such as the accessible Serra Gelada route are comfortable in cooler weather, and afternoon shows run across town.

What is on in Benidorm at Christmas?

In 2025 the lights went on on 29 November, and Plaza SSMM Reyes de España became the Plaza de la Navidad with an ice rink, stalls and fireworks until 6 January.
