What the live reading means
The live figure is a model estimate of water temperature close to the sea surface, not a thermometer on the beach. Open-Meteo draws it from a Météo-France ocean model distributed through Copernicus, on a grid of about 8 km, refreshed daily.
That makes it a good guide to the bay as a whole, but the shallows at the water's edge can feel different on the day: warmer after a calm, sunny afternoon, cooler after wind has stirred the water. Treat the number as the temperature of the open bay and the monthly average beside it as what is normal for the time of year.
If the live reading fails to load, the monthly average is the safer planning figure. Each month in the table links to our full weather page for that month.
How the sea warms and cools through the year
The Mediterranean lags the air by several weeks. The sea is coldest in February, when afternoons on land already reach 18°C, and warmest in August and early September, often after the hottest air of the year has passed.
That lag works in autumn visitors' favour. In October the sea still averages around 22°C, as warm as June, while the beaches are far quieter; see Benidorm weather in October and Benidorm in October. By November it drops to about 19°C, which most people find cool but swimmable for a short dip (November weather).
Spring is the opposite. Air temperatures in April and May feel like summer, but the water is still recovering from winter; May reaches about 19°C only by the end of the month (May weather).
When is it warm enough to swim?
For most holidaymakers the sea feels comfortable from about 20°C, which in Benidorm means June to October. Open-water swimmers describe 15–20°C as fine once you are used to it, and 20–25°C as balmy.
June to October: easy swimming
Water from about 22°C to 26°C. Long swims are comfortable without a wetsuit, and in August the sea feels close to pool temperature. Children can stay in for hours.
May and November: bracing but swimmable
Around 19°C. Expect a gasp on entry, then a pleasant swim of 10–20 minutes. A thin wetsuit or swim shirt helps if you feel the cold.
December to April: dips for the hardy
About 14–17°C. Most visitors paddle rather than swim, and heated hotel pools take over. Cold-water swimmers do use the bay all winter, but keep swims short and never swim alone.
Wetsuits, kit and safety
From June to October a wetsuit is unnecessary for most people, and in water above 25°C it can make you overheat. Below about 18°C a 3 mm shorty or full suit makes snorkelling and long swims much more pleasant.
- Beach flags: red means no bathing, yellow means take care. A jellyfish flag may fly alongside either.
- Lifeguards cover Levante and Poniente from 1 June to 30 September; outside that period, swim near other people and stay within your depth.
- Water shoes help at the rocky coves and on stony stretches.
- Sea temperature has no effect on UV: high-factor sun cream is still essential from May to September.
Jellyfish and beach flags
Jellyfish arrive with warm summer currents. Benidorm council's 2026 beach page names three species to recognise: the common moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita), the pink-purple Pelagia noctiluca, and the yellow fried-egg jellyfish (Cotylorhiza tuberculata). It publishes jellyfish bulletins and a treatment sheet during the season.
The council acts quickly when something dangerous appears. In June 2019 two Portuguese man o' war were found, and red and jellyfish flags went up, closing Levante and Poniente to bathers for about an hour and Mal Pas for just over two. If you are stung, go to the nearest first-aid post. Our Benidorm beaches guide explains the flags, lifeguard posts and facilities on each beach.
Best beaches for a swim
Benidorm's two main beaches both hold Blue Flags for 2026 and both shelve gently into calm water.
- Levante beach: about 2 km long, busiest, with a floating platform in summer and the liveliest bars behind it.
- Poniente beach: about 3.2 km and wider, quieter, with sun until sunset.
- Mal Pas: a small, sheltered beach below the Old Town.
- Benidorm Island: clear water for snorkelling, reached by boat from the port.
Benidorm sea temperature today — FAQs
Is the sea warm in Benidorm in October?
Yes. The long-term average for October is about 22°C, as warm as June, so swimming is comfortable for most people. The sea cools through the month and is around 19°C by November. Check the live reading on this page for the current figure before you pack a wetsuit.
When is the sea warmest in Benidorm?
August, at about 26°C on average, with July and September close behind at about 25°C. The warmest sea often lingers into early September, after the hottest air temperatures have passed, which makes late summer a good time for long swims.
Can you swim in the sea in Benidorm in winter?
Only if you like cold water. From December to April the sea averages about 14–17°C, which most visitors find too cold for more than a paddle. Cold-water swimmers do swim through winter; keep it short, stay within your depth and never swim alone.
How accurate is the live sea temperature?
It is a model estimate for the bay, not a beach thermometer. Open-Meteo takes it from a Météo-France ocean model on a grid of about 8 km, updated daily. The shallows at the shoreline can be a degree or two different on a calm or windy day.
Do I need a wetsuit to swim in Benidorm?
Not from June to October, when the water is about 22–26°C. In May and November, at around 19°C, a thin shorty helps if you feel the cold. From December to April a 3 mm wetsuit makes a swim or snorkel far more comfortable.
Are there jellyfish in Benidorm?
Sometimes, mainly in summer when warm currents bring them in. The council names moon jellyfish, Pelagia noctiluca and fried-egg jellyfish as the species to recognise. Watch for the jellyfish flag beside the lifeguard flag and head to a first-aid post if stung.
