In an emergency in Benidorm, call 112. The public hospital is Hospital Marina Baixa in Villajoyosa (966 859 800), and the new Rincón de Loix health centre has a 24-hour care area. Hospital Clínica Benidorm and Hospital IMED Levante are private, with 24-hour emergency departments, and do not accept the EHIC or UK GHIC, so carry travel insurance as well as your card.

Public hospital: Hospital Marina Baixa
Benidorm's public hospital is Hospital Marina Baixa at Avenida Alcalde en Jaume Botella Mayor 7 in Villajoyosa, just south of Benidorm. It is the public hospital the council lists in its own emergency numbers for Benidorm's beaches.
With a valid EHIC, UK GHIC or Provisional Replacement Certificate, medically necessary treatment in the public system is free or reduced-cost, on the same basis as for Spanish residents. Bring your card and passport. For getting there by public transport, the TRAM L1 stops in Villajoyosa; see getting around Benidorm.
Health centres and urgent care in Benidorm
For problems that need a doctor but not a hospital, use a public health centre (centro de salud). The new Rincón de Loix health centre on Calle Zamora, next to the Antonio López football pitches, opened on 2 March 2026 and serves residents and tourists staying in the area's hotels and apartments.
It has a separate continuous-care area with three doctors' rooms, a nursing room, a resuscitation room, an observation room and a 24-hour patient care centre with basic X-ray. Other public centres include Tomás Ortuño in the centre and Foietes on Calle Venezuela.
Benidorm's health centres close in the afternoons in summer, a schedule that runs until October, and a council statement in July 2026 said people needing urgent care when Tomás Ortuño is closed go to the Rincón de Loix centre.
Private hospitals: Clínica Benidorm and IMED Levante
Visit Benidorm lists two private hospitals in town, both with 24-hour emergency departments and multilingual staff.
Hospital Clínica Benidorm
In the centre of Benidorm, at Avenida Alfonso Puchades 8 (965 853 850). It has more than 40 specialties, inpatient wards, an outpatient clinic, 24-hour emergencies and a cardiac catheterisation unit open around the clock.
Hospital IMED Levante
Visit Benidorm lists 24-hour emergencies, surgery, inpatient wards, advanced imaging, physiotherapy, laboratory tests and a dialysis centre. Check its address and phone number on the IMED Hospitales website before you need it.
EHIC, GHIC and travel insurance
An EHIC or UK GHIC covers state healthcare only, never private treatment. The UK government warns that hotels may call private doctors or ambulances that take you to a private hospital, where the card is not accepted and you will be asked for payment or insurance details.
- Carry travel insurance as well: the cards do not cover medical repatriation or mountain rescue.
- If you want the public system, say so and ask for the health centre or Hospital Marina Baixa.
- Lost your GHIC? NHS Overseas Healthcare Services can issue a Provisional Replacement Certificate; the hospital billing team can request it for you.
Pharmacies and the duty pharmacy (farmacia de guardia)
Pharmacies (farmacias) are a good first stop for minor problems: pharmacists can advise on over-the-counter treatments and tell you when you need a doctor. Opening hours vary from pharmacy to pharmacy, so check the door before you rely on one.
Outside normal hours, one pharmacy in each area stays open on a rota as the farmacia de guardia. The Spanish pharmacists' council (farmaceuticos.com) lists duty pharmacies for Alicante province online. Your hotel reception can also tell you which one is open.
Expect to need a prescription for antibiotics: Spain's medicines agency has run campaigns with pharmacists on dispensing them correctly.
Prescriptions and bringing medicines
Bring enough of any regular medicine for the whole trip, in its original packaging, with a copy of your prescription. A UK prescription can be used in Spain, but medicines are not free: with a GHIC or EHIC you pay 50% of the price, or 10% with a UK State Pension, and the charge cannot be refunded.
Controlled drugs need a letter from your prescriber, and some medicines legal at home are regulated differently in Spain. Long-stay visitors bringing more than three months' supply should check with a Spanish consulate first.
Dentists and other care
Only some basic dental treatment is available in the Spanish state system, and the UK government notes that most people in Spain use private dentists. Expect to pay a private dentist directly and claim on your travel insurance; check your policy's dental limit before you go.
For accessible beaches and adapted transport, see accessible Benidorm. If you are driving to a hospital or clinic, check parking in Benidorm, as Avenida Alfonso Puchades, home of Clínica Benidorm, is among the streets Visit Benidorm lists in the low-emission zone; licensed Benidorm taxis avoid the problem.

Benidorm hospitals, health centres and pharmacies — FAQs
What is the main hospital for Benidorm?
The public hospital is Hospital Marina Baixa at Avenida Alcalde en Jaume Botella Mayor 7 in Villajoyosa, just south of Benidorm, phone 966 859 800. Benidorm also has two private hospitals with 24-hour emergency departments, Hospital Clínica Benidorm and Hospital IMED Levante.
Can I use my GHIC or EHIC in Benidorm?
Yes, at public health centres and Hospital Marina Baixa, for medically necessary treatment on the same terms as Spanish residents. It is not accepted at private hospitals such as Clínica Benidorm or IMED Levante, and it does not cover repatriation, so travel insurance is still essential.
Where can I see a doctor in Benidorm out of hours?
The Rincón de Loix public health centre on Calle Zamora, opened in March 2026, has a 24-hour patient care centre. In a serious emergency call 112. Private hospitals Clínica Benidorm and IMED Levante also run 24-hour emergency departments, but you will pay or need insurance.
How do I find a pharmacy open at night in Benidorm?
Look for the farmacia de guardia, the pharmacy on the overnight and holiday rota. The Spanish pharmacists' council lists duty pharmacies for Alicante province on farmaceuticos.com, and your hotel reception can tell you which one is open tonight.
Do I pay for prescriptions in Spain with a GHIC?
Yes. With a GHIC or EHIC you pay 50% of the prescription price, or 10% if you receive a UK State Pension and can show proof. The charge is not refundable. Bring enough regular medication from home, in its original packaging.
Is the ambulance free in Benidorm?
A public ambulance called through 112 takes you into the state system, where an EHIC or GHIC covers medically necessary care. The UK government warns that hotels sometimes call private ambulances that go to private hospitals, where the card is not accepted, so say if you want the public hospital.
Are there English-speaking doctors in Benidorm?
Visit Benidorm says most of the town's private medical centres have multilingual staff for international patients, and the UK government publishes a list of medical providers in Spain, some of whom speak English.
