Quick answer: No. As of October 2026 there is no tourist tax in Benidorm or anywhere in the Valencian region (Comunitat Valenciana). A regional tax was approved in 2022 but was scrapped before it was ever charged, and Benidorm council has opposed one for years. If a booking site adds a "city tax" for a Benidorm stay, ask what it is, because it should not be a local tourist levy.
Why people think Benidorm has one
Several Spanish destinations do charge visitors. Catalonia, including Barcelona, and the Balearic Islands, including Mallorca and Ibiza, add a per-night tax to hotel bills. Holiday news often lumps "Spain" together, so visitors assume Benidorm is the same. It is not.
What happened to the Valencian tourist tax
The left-wing regional government that ran the Comunitat Valenciana until 2023 agreed a voluntary, municipal tourist tax, which towns could choose to apply. Benidorm's mayor, Toni Pérez, said the town's answer was "no and never", calling it a tax that would penalise tourism (Valencia Plaza). Benidorm's council also passed a unanimous motion against it (Alicante Plaza).
After the 2023 regional election, the new government's tourism chief, Nuria Montes, said the tax would never be applied and would be repealed before the end of that year (Valencia Plaza). It was never charged.
Could Benidorm get a tourist tax in future?
It is a live political question. Benidorm's Socialist mayoral candidate, Pere Rostoll, has said he supports a tourist tax and will campaign for it (elDiario.es), while the town's current governing party opposes one. Spain's next municipal elections are due in May 2027. Any new tax would need regional legislation first, so it could not appear on a bill overnight. We will update this page if anything changes.
