What time is it in Benidorm?

Updated 15/10/2026 by the onbenidorm team · Dates checked October 2026

Benidorm runs on Spanish mainland time: Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) in winter and Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) from late March to late October. That is one hour ahead of the UK, Ireland and Portugal and the same as the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. Clocks next go back at 03:00 on Sunday 25 October 2026.

    Benidorm time compared with home

Benidorm is one hour ahead of London, Dublin and Lisbon all year round, because the UK, Ireland and Portugal change their clocks on the same nights as Spain. If it is 20:00 in Manchester or Cork, it is 21:00 on the Levante strip.

Visitors from the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany need to do nothing: Benidorm shares their time exactly. The clock above shows the live time in Benidorm next to London, Amsterdam, Helsinki and New York, so you can check before ringing home or booking a call.

One trap catches island-hoppers: the Canary Islands are one hour behind mainland Spain, on the same time as the UK. A Tenerife holiday last year tells you nothing about Benidorm time.

Clock change dates for 2026 and 2027

Spain changes its clocks on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October, at 01:00 GMT, under the EU summer-time directive. In Benidorm that means 02:00 jumps to 03:00 in spring and 03:00 falls back to 02:00 in autumn.

Spain's government proposed ending the twice-yearly change in October 2025, but the EU Council has not agreed a common position, so the changes below still apply. The European Commission has published dates up to 2031.

    • The UK and Ireland change at the same moment, so the one-hour gap never changes.
    • On 25 October 2026 the hour from 02:00 to 03:00 happens twice, so double-check any very late plans or early taxi bookings.
    • Bars licensed until 03:30 get an extra hour of night on the October change, and lose one in March.

Why Spain is on Central European Time

Spain sits on roughly the same longitude as Britain, and Madrid lies almost directly south of London, yet its clocks match Berlin. Spain kept Greenwich Mean Time from 1901 until 1940, when Franco moved the clocks forward one hour to align with Nazi Germany.

The change was never reversed. A Spanish parliamentary committee proposed returning to GMT in 2013, linking the late clock to Spaniards sleeping less than other Europeans, but no government has acted on it.

The practical effect for visitors is late light. The sun rises and sets later by the clock than you might expect, which is one reason evening life in Benidorm starts late. Our sunrise and sunset times page shows how late the sun goes down each month.

A Benidorm day by the clock

Spanish meal times run later than in northern Europe, and Benidorm's entertainment follows them. Spanish restaurants usually serve lunch from about 13:30 or 14:00 to 15:30 or 16:00, and dinner from about 21:00. British bars and cafés serve food all day, so you can eat at 18:00 if you prefer.

Shows start late too. In the fortnight from 15 October 2026 our listings carried 1,381 shows, and 80% of them started between 20:00 and 01:59, with the busiest start times 21:00 and 22:00. About one in eight started in the afternoon, mostly at beach bars such as the Jolly Roger Beach Bar.

Typical daily rhythm in Benidorm (local time)
    TimeWhat happens
08:00–11:00Breakfast; full English in British bars
13:30–16:00Spanish lunch, the menú del día
12:00–19:00Afternoon acts at beach and strip bars
From 21:00Spanish dinner; evening shows in full swing
00:00–03:30Late shows; pubs and karaoke close by 03:30

    Phones, flights and jet lag

A one-hour shift causes little jet lag, but it does cause missed transfers. Smartphones switch to Spanish time automatically once they connect to a local network; manually set watches, older cameras and car clocks do not.

    • Flight tickets show local time at each airport, so your Alicante departure time is already Spanish time.
    • Set your airport alarm on your phone after it has switched, not the night before you fly out.
    • Hotel pick-up times and excursion times are always local time.
    • Ringing home in the evening: 22:00 in Benidorm is 21:00 in the UK and Ireland.

All our listing times are Spanish local time

Every start time on onbenidorm, from tribute acts tonight to the Benidorm Palace programme, is shown in Benidorm time, whatever time zone your phone or laptop is set to. Our listings treat anything before 05:00 as part of the previous night, so a 01:00 Saturday show sits on Friday night's list.

If you are planning from home, add one hour to UK or Irish time to see what is on now, or use what's on this week to plan ahead.

What time is it in Benidorm? — FAQs

Is Benidorm one hour ahead of the UK?

Yes. Benidorm is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland all year, because both countries move their clocks on the same nights in March and October. When it is noon in London or Dublin, it is 13:00 in Benidorm. The Canary Islands are the exception in Spain: they share UK time.

When do the clocks go back in Benidorm in 2026?

On Sunday 25 October 2026, when 03:00 becomes 02:00 and Benidorm returns to Central European Time, UTC+1. The UK changes at the same moment, so the one-hour difference stays. The next change forward is Sunday 28 March 2027, and clocks go back again on 31 October 2027.

Is Spain getting rid of the clock change?

Not yet. Spain's prime minister proposed ending seasonal clock changes in October 2025, but the EU Council has not agreed a common position and has set no timeline. The European Commission has published clock-change dates up to 2031, so plan on changes continuing.

Why is Spain in the same time zone as Germany?

Because of a 1940 decision. Spain used Greenwich Mean Time from 1901, then Franco moved the clocks forward one hour to match Nazi Germany, and it was never changed back. Geographically, Spain lines up with the UK and Portugal, which is why its sunsets come so late by the clock.

What time do shows start in Benidorm?

Mostly in the evening. In the fortnight from 15 October 2026, 80% of the shows in our listings started between 20:00 and 01:59, with 21:00 and 22:00 the busiest start times. Beach bars run afternoon acts from about midday. All times we list are Spanish local time.

What time do people eat dinner in Benidorm?

Spanish restaurants usually serve dinner from about 21:00, and lunch, the main meal, from about 13:30 or 14:00 to 16:00. British bars and international restaurants on the strip serve food all day, so eating at 18:00 is easy. Book Old Town tapas bars for 21:00 or later at weekends.
