TRAM lines, stops and fares from Benidorm
Benidorm sits where the two coastal TRAM lines meet: L1 runs south to Alicante Luceros and L9 runs north to Dénia. Altea and Calpe are on L9, not L1, so check the line before you board.
You can board at Benidorm station on Av. Beniardà, which is gated and sells travel cards, or at Benidorm Intermodal by the bus station on the edge of town. Terra Mítica also has its own stop, handy for a Terra Mítica day.
L9 reopened end to end on 28 January 2025 after its viaducts were renewed, and in its first year Altea station handled about 290,000 passengers and Calpe about 240,000. New fares started on 1 October 2026, and the single ticket rose from €1.45 to €2.
How many zones each trip crosses decides your fare, and that was not confirmed for this guide. Ask at the ticket machine or the station before buying a return.
- A 10-trip bono for 1 zone costs €5.40 and a 30-trip bono €15.40, with the discount running until 31 December 2026.
- Singles and returns get no discount.
- Under-14s travel free until 31 December 2026.
- The new monthly Móbilis passes (€35, or €29.75 for young people) are mainly for Alicante city travel and are unlikely to suit a holiday.
| Ticket | 1 zone | 2 zones | 3 zones |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | €2.00 | €2.90 | €4.00 |
| Return | €3.00 | €5.00 | €6.80 |
Buses for Algar and Guadalest
The two inland villages are served by Llorente Bus (part of Avanza), with one bus out in the morning and one back each day. Both start at Av. Mariners de la Vila 16 in Cala Finestrat and pick up through Benidorm, including Pérez Devesa, Jaime I, Av. Mediterráneo, the Rincón de Loix and Severo Ochoa, before heading through La Nucía and Polop.
On 12 October 2026, line 016 to Guadalest left Cala Finestrat at 09:45 and came back from the Guadalest car park at 13:30. Line 018 to the Algar waterfalls left at 09:55 and came back from the falls at 17:00. Fares are not published in text on the operator's site.
If the direct Algar bus does not suit, line 052 runs every hour from 06:30 to 22:30 between Av. Mediterráneo 3 (Benidorm Centro) and Callosa d'en Sarrià, about 3 km from the falls. The Benidorm open-top bus tour sells tourist cards that cover the 16 and 18 excursion lines as well as its own routes and the town buses.
Do it yourself or book an organised tour?
Going by yourself is cheaper and more flexible on the coast, while a tour mostly saves you planning on the inland trips. The TRAM runs all day to Altea, Villajoyosa, Alicante and Calpe, so you can leave when you like and stay for dinner.
Inland is different. With one bus each way, a Guadalest trip by bus gives you the morning only, because the return leaves at 13:30. An organised coach tour or a taxi gives you more control over timing, and it may be worth paying for if you have small children or limited mobility.
There is also a sea option: boat operators at Benidorm port list routes to Altea and Calpe past the Serra Gelada cliffs, and Musement sells the Calpe boat from £29.
- DIY suits: Altea, Villajoyosa, Alicante and Calpe by TRAM, and Algar by the 018 if the 17:00 return works for you.
- A tour or taxi suits: Guadalest if you want more than a morning, groups who would rather not change buses, and visitors with mobility needs.
- Either way: check the return time before you set off, as missing a once-a-day bus means an expensive taxi back.
Where to go: the six best day trips
Each destination is a different kind of day out, from river swimming to a city break.
Algar Waterfalls (Fonts de l'Algar)
Seven natural river pools near Callosa d'en Sarrià, with water that stays around 18°C all year. In July and August visits run in three timed sessions, and online tickets must be bought at least 24 hours ahead. See our Algar waterfalls from Benidorm guide for buses, tickets and rules.
Guadalest
A hilltop village with a castle, a reservoir viewpoint and eight small museums, from historic vehicles to microminiatures. Arrive early in summer, as the middle of the day gets busy and hot. Read the Guadalest from Benidorm guide.
Altea
Altea is about 30 minutes north on L9 and is best known for its whitewashed old town and the blue-and-white tiled dome of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo. It has pebble beaches and three marinas below. Our Benidorm to Altea guide has a walking route.
Alicante
The provincial capital is about 72 minutes away on L1, or 40–45 minutes on the direct Alsa bus. Santa Bárbara Castle is free to enter, and a €2.70 lift takes you up from opposite Postiguet beach. See the Alicante from Benidorm guide.
Villajoyosa
Villajoyosa is the shortest hop, about 15–18 minutes south on L1. Its main draw for visitors is the Valor Chocolate Museum on C/ Pianista Gonzalo Soriano 13, which runs guided tours only, lasting about 45 minutes. English tours run on weekdays at 10:00, 15:00 and 16:00 and on Saturdays at 10:00, and they must be booked online, up to two months ahead.
The museum is closed on Sundays, holidays and 23–31 December and has no parking, so take the TRAM. Our Villajoyosa from Benidorm guide covers the coloured houses, beaches and market too.
Calpe
Calpe is further up L9, about 40–50 minutes from Benidorm, and is home to the Peñón de Ifach rock. With the line fully reopened, it makes a straightforward longer coastal day. You can stop in Altea on the way back to split the trip. See the Calpe from Benidorm guide for the Peñón permit, the fish auction and the salt flats.
Valencia
Spain's third city is a long but realistic day out: the Alsa coach takes about 1 hour 45 minutes each way. Go for the City of Arts and Sciences, the Central Market and a proper Valencian paella. Our Valencia from Benidorm guide has a timed itinerary and costs.
Tips for a day trip from Benidorm
Most day-trip problems come down to timing and the weather.
- Check bus times the day before, as the 016 and 018 timetables change through the year.
- Avoid the midday heat inland in July and August, when average highs reach 30–31°C. The Benidorm weather guide has monthly figures.
- Buy Algar tickets online at least 24 hours ahead in July and August, as day tickets at the gate depend on capacity.
- Pack water shoes for Algar and flat, comfortable shoes for Guadalest and Altea's hilly old town.
- Carry some cash for small museums and village cafés.
- If it rains, Alicante is the best choice, with a free castle museum and the Mercado Central. Our rainy day guide covers ideas closer to home.
- Times are Spanish time, one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland.
Half-day ideas closer to Benidorm
If a full day away feels like too much, several good outings start in Benidorm itself. Boats to Benidorm Island leave from the port on Paseo de Colón, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. Visit Benidorm puts the price at about €15–€22 per person.
The Serra Gelada Natural Park cliffs rise above 300 m on the Levante side of town, with walking routes from the Rincón de Loix. Theme parks such as Terra Mítica and Terra Natura are a short ride away. Our things to do in Benidorm guide and free things to do guide have more ideas.

Day Trips from Benidorm by Bus and TRAM — FAQs
What is the best day trip from Benidorm without a car?
Altea is the easiest. It is about 30 minutes north on TRAM line L9, the old town is free to explore, and you can come back whenever you like. For something different, the Algar waterfalls are reachable on the once-a-day 018 bus, and Alicante is a full city day on L1, with a free castle.
How much is the TRAM from Benidorm?
From 1 October 2026 a single costs €2 for one zone, €2.90 for two and €4 for three, and returns cost €3, €5 and €6.80. Which fare you need depends on how many zones your trip crosses, so check at the machine. Under-14s travel free until 31 December 2026.
Does the TRAM go from Benidorm to Altea and Calpe?
Yes, on line L9, which runs north from Benidorm to Dénia and reopened end to end on 28 January 2025. Altea is about 30 minutes away and Calpe about 40–50 minutes. Line L1 runs the other way, south to Villajoyosa and Alicante.
Is there a bus from Benidorm to the Algar waterfalls?
Yes. Llorente Bus line 018 runs once a day. On 12 October 2026 it left Cala Finestrat at 09:55, picked up at Benidorm stops including Av. Mediterráneo and the Rincón de Loix, and returned from the falls at 17:00. The alternative is the hourly 052 bus to Callosa d'en Sarrià and a short taxi.
Can you do Guadalest and Algar in one day by bus?
Not easily. Each village has one bus from Benidorm in the morning, about ten minutes apart, and the buses do not link the two. Combining them really needs a car, a taxi or an organised tour. By bus, pick one per day.
How long does it take to get from Benidorm to Alicante?
About 72 minutes on TRAM L1 to Luceros, with trams every 30 minutes at :05 and :35 past the hour until 22:05. The direct Alsa bus from Benidorm bus station takes about 40–45 minutes to Alicante bus station.
Are there day trips from Benidorm by boat?
Yes. Operators at Benidorm port list boat routes to Altea and Calpe that pass the Serra Gelada cliffs, and Musement sells the Calpe trip from £29. Boats to Benidorm Island leave from the port on Paseo de Colón, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes.
