How we calculate the times
The times above are calculated for Benidorm's position (38.54°N, 0.12°W) with the standard NOAA solar formula, accurate to about a minute, and shown in Spanish local time. Sunset is the moment the top of the sun drops below a flat sea horizon.
In practice the sun can disappear a few minutes early from parts of town: from Levante, the Old Town headland and the tower blocks hide it before the official time, so head west to watch it reach the horizon.
Benidorm's sunsets are late by the clock because Spain uses Central European Time despite sitting on the same longitude as Britain; our time in Benidorm page explains why.
Best places to watch the sunset in Benidorm
Face west: Poniente beach and the hills at its ends give the clearest sunsets, while the Old Town headland gives views both ways along the bay.
Poniente beach
Poniente faces the setting sun and keeps its light until sunset all year, past 20:00 in summer. Walk the promenade towards La Cala as the sky turns orange, or take a seat at a beachfront bar. It is the easiest choice for families and anyone with limited mobility.
Balcón del Mediterráneo
The white balustrade on the castle headland, between Levante and Poniente, is Benidorm's best-known viewpoint, and the tourist board recommends it at sunset. It gets busy in summer; arrive 30 minutes early for a spot by the railings, then walk down into the Old Town for dinner.
Tossal de la Cala
This hilltop at the far end of Poniente, about 100 m high, looks along Poniente beach and Cala de Finestrat and is the least crowded of the town's viewpoints. The walk up from the start of the Paseo de Poniente is about 2.5 km return and takes roughly an hour; bring a torch for the way down.
La Cruz and Serra Gelada
The cross above Rincón de Loix gives a 180-degree view of the skyline and both beaches, and it is lit after dark. The marked route is about 5 km return with a 237 m climb, so start the descent before the light goes. See our Serra Gelada walks guide.
Rooftop bars
For a drink with the view, our rooftop bars page lists terraces open to non-guests. The Gran Hotel Bali Sky Bar charges non-guests €10 and usually closes around 19:00, so it suits winter sunsets better than summer ones. Our skyscrapers guide covers the towers behind the skyline shots.
Golden hour for photos
Golden hour has no official definition, but photographers use the period when the sun is between about 6 degrees above and 6 degrees below the horizon. At Benidorm's latitude that lasts roughly an hour, so start shooting about 40 minutes before the sunset time above and keep going for 20 minutes after.
- Levante's skyline glows best in the hour before sunset, seen from the Balcón del Mediterráneo or La Cruz.
- Poniente gives silhouettes of palms and walkers against the sun.
- The sky often colours most strongly 10 to 20 minutes after the sun has gone.
- Early risers get sunrise over the sea from Levante, with Benidorm Island in the foreground.
Sunset, dinner and show times
In summer the sun sets after 21:00, which is why Spanish dinner starts so late. A sunset walk at Poniente, then tapas in the Old Town from about 21:30, is the classic Benidorm evening; Tapas Alley is close to the Balcón in the Old Town.
Evening entertainment overlaps with sunset in summer. In the fortnight from 15 October 2026 most shows in our listings started at 21:00 or 22:00, after sunset at this time of year, while afternoon acts at the Daytona Rock Beach Bar and other beach bars finished around dusk. Check what's on tonight and pick a show that starts after you are back from the viewpoint.
How the clock change shifts sunset
On Sunday 25 October 2026 clocks go back one hour, so sunset moves from about 19:12 on the Saturday to about 18:10 on the Sunday. Through November and December it keeps creeping earlier, reaching about 17:40 in early December, though afternoons stay bright and mild.
The reverse happens on Sunday 28 March 2027, when sunset jumps from about 19:19 to 20:20 overnight. From then until September, a sunset drink fits easily before the evening shows start.
