Villaitana: two Nicklaus courses in Benidorm

Villaitana is the obvious choice for a full round: two 18-hole courses by Nicklaus Design at the Villaitana resort on Avenida Alcalde Eduardo Zaplana, listed about 1.8 miles from the centre of Benidorm.

    Levante course

The Levante is the championship course: par 72 and more than 6,600 m, with narrow, American-style fairways and views over the Mediterranean and the Sierra de Finestrat. Green fees are listed at €100 in January, February, June to August and December, rising to €125 in the busier spring and autumn months (March to May and September to November), with 50% off for juniors and students.

You need a handicap certificate to play it. The listing sites disagree on the exact limits, quoting 28 for men and 36 for women on one and the reverse on the other, so check when you book.

    Poniente executive course

The Poniente is a par-62 executive course of about 3,860 m, laid out on a pine-covered hillside. It suits holiday golfers who want 18 holes without the length of the Levante, and no handicap requirement is listed. Fees are €65 in the cheaper months and €85 in spring and autumn.

    Hire and facilities

A buggy is listed from €18, an electric trolley from €12, a push trolley from €4 and club hire from €35. The clubhouse has a café, sea-view terraces, a pro shop, an academy and practice facilities. Tee times are booked through the resort; the phone number is 96 681 50 00.

Las Rejas: pitch and putt in town

Las Rejas Open Club is Benidorm's easy-going option: a 9-hole, par-27 course of 929 m set in pine woods a short walk from Poniente.

It suits beginners, families and anyone who wants an hour of golf between beach sessions. Rates differ by source: one listing gives €21 for 9 holes, or €14 from 15:00, while a Benidorm hotel group lists €15 for unlimited play and €8.55 for 9 holes after 15:00. Clubs, trolleys and carts can be hired, and there is a driving range, with a bucket of 40 balls listed at €3. Phone +34 966 88 97 75.

    Puig Campana Golf, Finestrat

Puig Campana Golf is a 9-hole, par-36 course in the Alfarella development at Finestrat, listed about 10 km and 14 minutes by car from a Benidorm beach hotel.

One listing describes it as flat with water hazards; a hotel golf page mentions rugged sections, a gorge and sea views. A 9-hole round is listed at €30 (or €20 in low season), and two loops for 18 holes at €55 in high season or €38 in low season. Clubs, trolleys and buggies can be hired.

Altea Club de Golf (formerly Don Cayo)

Altea Club de Golf, still known to many golfers as Don Cayo, is a 9-hole course built in 1974 in the foothills of the Sierra de Altea, about 20 minutes' drive north of Benidorm.

You play the nine twice for a par-72 round of about 5,400 m from the yellow tees. It is semi-private but open to green-fee players, from 08:00 until dusk all year. A Benidorm hotel group lists €30 for 9 holes and €45 for 18. It has a restaurant and bar, and Altea's old town is close by; see our Benidorm to Altea guide.

La Sella and other courses for a day out

For a bigger day, La Sella in Jesús Pobre, near Dénia, has 27 holes designed by José María Olazábal and opened in 1992, played as par-72 combinations.

Green fees are listed at €75 for 18 holes and €43 for 9, the same every day, with half price for juniors. It is the furthest course in this guide, so plan on a hire car or a taxi transfer.

Tips for golf on a Benidorm holiday

All the courses here are open year round, which makes Benidorm a practical winter golf base; Villaitana is cheaper in December to February and in summer than in spring and autumn.

    • Season: the cheaper winter rates suit long stays; see Benidorm in winter and Benidorm weather in January. In July and August, book the earliest tee time you can.
    • Getting there: Villaitana and Las Rejas are a short taxi ride from most hotels. Puig Campana, Altea and La Sella are easier by car.
    • Handicap: carry your handicap certificate for the Villaitana Levante course; the par-3 and 9-hole courses do not list a requirement.
    • Where to stay: the Villaitana resort has hotels beside the courses; compare options in our hotels in Benidorm guide.
