    Medical emergencies

For anything serious — chest pain, breathing problems, a bad fall, a suspected stroke — call 112 and ask for an ambulance. For less urgent problems, the public Rincón de Loix health centre has a 24-hour care area, and the private Hospital Clínica Benidorm and Hospital IMED Levante both run 24-hour emergency departments.

Private hospitals do not accept the UK GHIC or EHIC and will ask for travel insurance details or a card payment. Our hospitals, health centres and pharmacies guide has addresses, what the GHIC covers and how prescriptions work.

    • Carry your GHIC or EHIC and your travel insurance policy number.
    • Ring your insurer's emergency line as soon as you can; many must approve treatment.
    • Keep receipts for anything you pay, to claim back later.

    Pharmacies and minor problems

Spanish pharmacies (farmacias, marked with a green cross) can help with sunburn, upset stomachs, heat rash and minor infections, and pharmacists often speak English. At night and on Sundays, a duty pharmacy (farmacia de guardia) stays open; each pharmacy door shows the nearest one. For heat rash, see our prickly heat in Benidorm guide.

    Crime, theft and lost passports

To report a theft, go to a Policía Nacional station or call 091. You'll need a police report (denuncia) for an insurance claim. If your passport is lost or stolen, report it to the police first, then apply for an emergency travel document through GOV.UK; the British Consulate in Alicante covers the Costa Blanca.

Pickpockets work the busiest spots, such as the Levante promenade, Calle Gerona late at night and the markets. Our is Benidorm safe guide covers the common scams and how to avoid them.

    Dentists, vets and other help

Benidorm has many private dental clinics, several with English-speaking staff; dental treatment is not covered by the GHIC. Pet owners will find vets across town, and our dog-friendly Benidorm guide covers the rules for dogs. For getting to a clinic or hospital, Benidorm taxis run 24 hours; see our taxi guide.

Useful Spanish phrases in an emergency

Most emergency staff speak some English, but a few words help.

    • ¡Ayuda! — Help!
    • Necesito una ambulancia — I need an ambulance
    • Llame a la policía — Call the police
    • Me han robado — I've been robbed
    • ¿Dónde está la farmacia de guardia? — Where is the duty pharmacy?
    • Soy alérgico / alérgica a… — I'm allergic to…
